Different industries attract different types of people. Each office has a specific culture. So, how do you create a healthy and positive practice with a strong team that can provide a high-caliber of service to your patients? Here are some tried and true general business practices that can be applied to great affect at your practice.
Define Your Office Culture
Determine a few key cultural values that your dental office regards as vital to success and positive professionalism. What do you want the perception of your practice to be? What do you want the daily experience of the staff to be? How do you want disagreements or mistakes handled? What is your performance and attitude standard? Once you define these and embody them, employees with the same value system will naturally choose to work with you.
Management is the backbone of any organization. It is important that the management level of staff lead by example and reinforce the culture. Often it is the management-level employee that has the most face time with patients and other staff.
Outline Patient Service Expectations
Clearly define the level of service that is expected for your patients and their families. How do you want patients to feel from the moment they walk into your dental office? How can your staff ease tensions and fears? How will patients of different ages be treated? How can “client communications” be improved? Additionally, engaging your staff in setting these expectations will increase their ‘buy-in’ and ensure service expectations are being met.
Share in Success
Communicate with your staff when goals are met and share positive feedback whenever possible, both with the individual employee and the team as a whole. Setting goals and objectives alone are not enough. Without recognition of those goals being met, goals are just words. Recognition and reinforcement are key elements to creating a long-term positive environment.
